This funfetti frosting recipe is fast, easy, and uses ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry! It’s perfect for cookies and cupcakes.
My funfetti cake mix cookies are great by themselves, but I wanted to kick it up a notch and add some homemade frosting with sprinkles to it as well.
This funfetti frosting is a cinch to whip up. I kept it really simple – no fancy ingredients in here.
The frosting is definitely on the sweeter side, but that’s the way frosting should be IMO.
It’s perfect for kids’ birthday parties or for big kids like me. I will always love rainbow sprinkles. Always.
This frosting recipe makes a generous cup of frosting, so it’s definitely enough to ice a batch of cookies.
The recipe easily doubles, so if you’re frosting cupcakes or something that requires a bit more icing, that would be the way to go.
Tips for making the best funfetti frosting
- Make sure you let the butter soften for long enough. If you get impatient (I’m guilty), it won’t mix properly.
- You want to add any extra milk very slowly so the frosting doesn’t become too watery.
- You can never add too many sprinkles! 😉

Easy Funfetti Frosting Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups powdered (icing) sugar
- 1/4 cup butter softened
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon milk + extra as needed
- 2 tablespoons (or to taste) rainbow sprinkles
Instructions
- Let butter soften on counter (this step is crucial or it won't mix properly).
- Add the sugar, butter, vanilla, and 1 tablespoon of milk to a mixing bowl. Using an electric hand mixer, mix on low until it has the consistency of frosting. If it's too thick, thin it out with a little bit of water at a time.
- Once it's at your desired consistency, add the sprinkles and mix or stir them in.
- Frost cookies or cupcakes as needed. I suggest keeping the frosting in a cool place if you're not going to use it right away (e.g. fridge) because it tends to get melty.

Hi:-)
I’d this icing good for piping or is it too soft or hard?
Hi! I haven’t tried piping this one, so I can’t say for sure – sorry.
I made this recipe for a Christmas themed caked and it was amazing. If you add food dye to it makes the recipe more festive or fun looking!
Oh that’s wonderful! I am so pleased it worked out! 😀

Do the sprinkles stay crunchy in the frosting or kind of soften up?
Hi Marion! They will soften up with time, but they will be a bit crunchy the first day or so.
