This refreshing frozen margarita recipe is easy to make at home! It’s a classic cocktail with a zesty citrus punch of flavor, and the slushy goodness cools you down in hot weather.

Why you’ll love it

I don’t know about you, but these frozen margaritas are definitely the most fun thing I’ve ever made in my blender! They have such a delicious and tangy taste with a blend of sweet and sour flavors. It’s perfect for girls’ night, summer scorchers, and Taco Tuesday.

We’ve got a lively mix of citrus, sweetness, and tequila with a chilly, refreshing finish in this simple margarita recipe. I also like plenty of salt on the rim! They’re every bit as good as you’d get at your favorite Mexican restaurant. It’s basically a fiesta in a glass.

What you’ll need

  • Tequila – it’s fermented and distilled from the blue agave plant. I like using gold, but silver works too. You don’t need a top shelf brand to enjoy a margarita.
  • Lime juice – always use freshly squeezed! It adds the vibrant, tart quality.
  • Triple sec – this orange-flavored liqueur gives a sweet, citrusy note
  • Agave syrup – it’s the sweet liquid gold that comes from the blue agave plant
  • Ice – for the slush
  • Salt – it’s optional for a savory pop in each sip to balance the sweetness

How to make frozen margaritas

Coat the glasses with rimming salt. Add the rest of the ingredients to a blender, then blend until it’s slushy. Give it a taste, adjust as needed, then serve right away.

How to salt a rim

  • Chill the glass first if desired.
  • Cut a notch into a quarter of a lime. Run the lime all the way around the edge of your glass to wet it.
  • Pour the salt into a wide dish or plate. Tip the glass into the salt, and twist it around in the salt until coated.

Pro tip

As with any drink recipe, I encourage you to taste and adjust as you go along! Don’t be shy to add more sweetener, lime, or tequila.

Substitutions and variations

  • You can swap the Agave Syrup for simple syrup if you prefer. Here’s an easy homemade Simple Syrup.
  • Instead of salt, you could rim these with white sugar. Or get creative and use Tajin seasoning for a kick or coconut flakes for a tropical twist.
  • I’ve sometimes had margaritas that are garnished with mint.

What to serve with frozen margaritas

Leftovers and storage

  • Drink up before it melts! You could freeze leftovers in individually portioned ZipLoc bags if you need to, though.

Frozen Margaritas

This refreshing frozen margarita recipe is easy to make at home! It's a classic cocktail with a zesty citrus punch of flavor, and the slushy goodness cools you down in hot weather.

Servings: 2 large glasses

Ingredients 

  • 1/2 cup tequila
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/4 cup triple sec
  • 2 tablespoons agave syrup see note
  • 4 cups ice
  • Margarita rimming salt optional, to taste

Instructions 

  • Run a lime wedge along the rim of your margarita glass and then dip it into the rimming salt to coat (it's easiest to spread some on a plate). Repeat for the second glass.
  • Add the remaining ingredients to a blender and blend until it has a slushy consistency. Taste and adjust as needed e.g. add more sweetener or tequila. Pour into your margarita glasses and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can use a different sweetener than agave syrup. Simple syrup would work too. I like my margaritas fairly sweet. Feel free to add less than the 2 tablespoons to start with and then add more if needed. Keep in mind different sweeteners might vary in sweetness.
  • Simply double all ingredients if you want to make 4 drinks.
