- Honey – for that signature sweet quality
- Mustard – Dijon mustard is my go-to
- Garlic powder and onion powder – this pantry seasoning duo adds savory depth of flavor
- White vinegar or lemon juice – it’s an optional way to balance the sweetness if needed
Pro tip
Taste and adjust! No recipe will be perfect for every single person, so it’s easy to add a little more mustard or honey, for example, to get it just right for your taste buds.

- I love a metal prep bowl for mixing it up.
- You can just use a spoon to combine it, but a whisk works as well.
- Here’s the handy nested magnetic measuring spoons I like.
Substitutions and variations
- You can definitely play around with using different types of mustard, but keep in mind that the ratios are designed to balance each other out, so you may end up with a much sweeter sauce if you don’t use Dijon mustard, for example.
- You could try mixing a couple different types of mustard; e.g., Dijon and yellow mustard, spicy brown mustard, or whole grain mustard.
- Some honey mustard recipes add in a pinch of cayenne pepper. You can definitely try that!
What to serve with honey mustard sauce
- Chicken nuggets or tenders are my go-to with this dip. I sometimes just heat up store-bought ones in my air fryer!
- Other great options are Chicken Wings or Meatballs.
- Dipping soft pretzels into it is my favorite!
Leftovers and storage
- Store it in a covered container for up to a week. Give it a stir again prior to serving if needed.
- I don’t recommend freezing this homemade honey mustard sauce because it’s likely to change texture.
